Message from Hubert Steed
First, many thanks to all viewers of the photos in my galleries, especially those who leave their comments. You encourage me to continually update my galleries. I'm sorry I do not always respond to viewers comments. Unless there is a specific question or problem about the images and galleries, I most likely do not respond. My purpose in providing these photos is solely for a learning experience and for enjoyment.
By May 2002, I had reached retirement age and due to circumstances found myself restricted pretty much to a life in Manhattan, mostly in my neighborhood of Washington Square in Greenwich Village. I needed to find something to keep me engaged in personal and community affairs. Digital photography then became an important avenue for a lively living experience. Fortunately, Manhattan offers many photo opportunities so there is a wide range of subjects to capture and display.
The early photos in my galleries were taken with my first digital camera, a SiPix 2Meg learners camera. At the end of October 2002, I began using a Canon PowerShot S30 camera. In April 2004, I began using a Canon 300D Rebel camera. With this camera, I generally used the Canon 18-55mm kit lens; a Tamron 28-300mm; and Canon EFS 100 macro lens for most of my shots.
In March 2005, I began using an EOS 20D camera. In August 2005, I purchased a Canon EFS 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. Then the Canon 20D camera and Canon EFS 17-85mm and EFS 100 macro lenses became my primary shooting equipment. I've continued to use the Canon PowerShot S30 camera, when I am not carrying the more cumbersome SLR cameras. It's been a wonderful camera for spontaneous photography and can produce very good quality photos.
In December 2008, I began using a Nikon D300 camera with 18-200mm & 70-300 VR Nikon lenses.
At the end of November 2009, I began using a Canon PowerShot G11 pocket camera to replace my old Canon PowerShot S30. This spring 2014, I'm now using a Canon PowerShot G16.
Since 2004, I've been photographing gardens at our neighborhood community garden. An extensive collection of my photos of the garden can be found at https://pbase.com/hjsteed/laguardia_place_community_garden
Since August 2011, I have been actively engaged with helping to develop and maintain a blog at http://savewsvsasakigarden.blogspot.com/p/resources.html to save our local gardens from being destroyed by NYU's plan to build giant skyscrapers in the heart of historic Greenwich Village. I would appreciate any support viewers can provide to encourage NYU to expand in more appropriate places with more productive educational programs.

I am deeply grateful to have a notebook computer, the internet and digital photography to give my life additional purpose and meaning. Now that I'm a member of the PBase community, I'm happy to share my photos on the internet with all who are interested and hope they will enjoy them.
