Steve, I found your wonderful photo of a blue-backed manakin. I was recently in Trinidad and Tobago with my father who is a keen, life-long birdwatcher. On Tobago we saw the blue-backed manakin, and that bird so delighted me, it was my "bird of the trip." Neither my dad nor I have the skill needed to photograph them. I photographed what appeared to be a black heron atop a bush near a lake in Fort Myers, FL. The photo was taken through our patio screen but the heron is a solid black (legs are black but feet are embedded in the bush). The eyes appear black, but I've noted other pictures where the reported yellow eyes appear black. Have you ever seen a black heron in North America? Alternatively, what could this have been?

Hi Rainbirder, Thanks for your comment on picture 127887288, Martial Eagle. I intend to visit Gambia a second time for some sixteen days, January/February and visit (1) Marakissa, (2) Makasutu, (3) Tendaba and (4) ending up in the northern part of the Western Division before going back home. Last year I did only three days birdwatching with a guide. You know him well: Modou Colley. I would like to do this time a lot more with Modou. And there is my question to you. If my budget does allow me, I would spend three days (2 nights) in Mandina Lodges. But then it should be possible to explore Makasutu together with Modou. Hi Steve, thank you for your comments.In the past I managed my photos with a Canon 400mm DO lens which is indeed a good travel lens,but together with extender I was disappointed by very smooth pics.During our travel in South Africa I tried out the 300mm/2,8 Canon lens with 1,4 or 2x extender. My photographs are not comparable with Ingos who took the Canon 500mm lens .Its like the difference between black and white.Nevertheless I have my own gallery so I can remember some nice moments with birdwatching clearly and don't forget it. I read your tour report about Sri Lanka,many thanks. Furthermore it is exciting for me to look at photographs of flora and fauna from other countries ,so I enjoy your galleries with all!! photos. Hi, You do have some very nice photographs and I am looking for photographers who can consistently produce great images AND know how to edit. (You may well know this now-but someone else won't.). Relegate the images that remind you of a good or bad trip to the snapshot album...if the image isn't in focus where it should be and so forth, don't publish them. Someone else has a better photograph...stick to your passion...you'll produce your best work here. In order to sell my own photographs and produce a good selection of stock photographs, I am looking for photographers (wanderingfred@gmail.com title the email as "portfolio" as otherwise I will delete your email). My comments to you are that capturing the image is only the first part of a long process. I have looked at a number of your images and with a decent editing program, there are several in addition to Adobe...Corel Paint Shop Pro is quiet easy to use...look at GIMP which is similar to Adobe AND free....you can really improve your skills. Pay particular attention to your camera's histogram. Use the histogram in editing...that is the simple way...master curves and you will have more control over the image. Shoot in RAW format and in Adobe RGB not sRGB for best color management intended for reproduction. Use the unsharp mask (judiciously). Look at the excellent tutorials on cambridgeincolour dot com They have an excellent discussion on sharpening with the unsharp mask in addition to other topics. Nikon's Capture NX program has a very easy to use 'Control Point' for making adjustments to a specific area for color, saturation etc. What I most appreciated about your photography is you shot in the rain. Photography is not all about sunny days. Most of all enjoy, whether you shoot solely for your own peace of mind or commercially. Cheers, Fred.

Hi Rainbirder I lived in Dunfermline for 15 years before coming to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland two years ago. Very handy for Vane Farm, but you're right about the weather! Love your images and I was wondering if I could use the one of a rock nuthatch nest for a talk I'm giving to our local small bird group here. The subject will be "Birds nests and nesting behaviour" and I'm trying to show them one or two more unusual things. My wife and I visited the island only briefly during a two week stay on the west coast last May, but we fell in love with the place and are going back for a week next April.
