I have just visited Tom's gallery this evening because my daughter is doing a project for College on photographers and I wanted to show her some of Tom's wonderful photos. I studied on his last Digital Photography course at Gosforth High School and I cannot believe that he is no longer with us. He was a wonderful teacher, always patient and explaining everything so clearly and easily. I send my condolences to his wife and children, who he mentioned often, and knowho w sorely he will be missed by all who had the priviledge of knowing him. But what a legacy of beautiful photographs and memories he has left for us all to enjoy. Gone but never forgotten. Deborah Dabiri

What a shock to learn of Tom's passing. We go back 40 years when Tom and Anne lived in York. Even then Tom helped me with my simple and amateur type photography. They visited the house almost every week, but in summer Tom couldn't be found; eventually we would find him in the greenhouse reading his paper - it was warmer there. In all the years we knew him we encountered nothing but helpfulness, humour and an expertise in all that he did. Every time we sit at our computer we think of Tom. He built our first one and assisted and guided us with our present one. What a privelege and pleasure to have known Tom and his family. We admired Tom because whatever he did he excelled in it. A wonderful man.

The common theme in all of these messages is that Tom had a great sense of humour, i can vouch for that, Tom and I worked together at the Airport for around 19 years and we spent many times having a laugh at incidents that occured in the past. Sadly Tom and I lost touch following his retirement and it was a shock to learn of him passing away.
Tom was one of lifes characters, I am pleased he took up a very worthwhile hobby (photography) - looking at his photographs he was very accomplished at it.
Gone but not forgotten!

This is Jim Lanyon....

I have known Tom for almost 25 years. It was Tom who ,introduced me to photography, which has become a major hobby of mine(and the most expensive) Tom Derek and I travelled the North East together and were commonly known to our spouses as "the last of the summer wine" -the cheek of them - we thought of ourselves as "the three musketeers".

It was our ambition to capture all the castles and major churches etc in the North East, and as you can see from Tom's site, we did pretty well!

Needless to say, I will miss my old friend dearly, as will all who knew him.

Having met Tom via the internet, i guess it is rather fitting that i am posting this tribute, also via the web on Tom's own photography website.

I first met Tom in April 2005 whilst i was recovering from an operation. We both had a mutual interest in photography plus a lot more besides.. We met for the first time at Jarrow St Bedes and during that day toured a few of the local historical sites snapping pictures along the way. The day was fun from the moment we first met.
Tom had this knack of making everyone around him feel totally at ease. Later that afternoon, as i took Tom back to his car, i noticed him start to snooze (something he managed to do most late afternoons from then on) but not a problem to me, because i had just met the man who was to become my closest and very best friend.

Tom and i built up a real close affinity for one another, probably due to the commonalities that existed between us, he introduced me to Jim another of his photo pals and we all gelled from the outset. The BBC (Bacon Butty Club) was formed and we went in search of anything that would make a good picture, plus anywhere that made a good bacon butty!! Hundred's, no, thousands of photographs were taken (maybe not so many bacon butties eaten), but as many if not more laughs were to follow - such a wonderful time we had together.

Northumberland, North Yorksire, Newcastle Quayside, Cumbria and County Durham were the favourite venues, although the odd forage across the borders to Scotland was also known. Tom had a particular affinity with Bolam Lake, St Mary's Island, Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle, Tynemouth Priory and of course The Millenium Bridge, Sage Theatre and Newcastle Quayside as can be seen on this website.

Unfortunately, Tom, Jim and i were to to make our last joint photo trip on a bright but very cold and windy day late March. We went to Tynemouth Priory, one of Tom's favourite places for taking pictures, however Tom was not his usual self that day, he didn't even fancy a bacon butty, needless to say take a picture...

Sadly, Tom left us on Friday 2nd May, but the memories remain strong, the Asylum Seekers at Warkworth, the 'Free Cream Teas' at Cragside, the BBC at Heatherslaw Mill, the 'Old Fogies Tickets' at Finchale Priory (to understand the humour you just had to be there!!) and so so many others.....

I can only think of one way to sign off - by using two words that Tom would frequently use himself on so many emails and forum posts..

To my very best pal, "Happy Snapping"....

I was so sad to hear of Tom's passing. I was lucky enough to work for him at Newcastle International Airport and thought he was a lovely man and a perfect boss. Tom had a fantastic sense of humour and often had us laughing with his tales and quips. I have viewed his gallery of photographs and was not surprised at how good they are, as that was the measure of the man. I will always have fond memories of Tom and cannot imagine how much his family and friends will miss him.

Sadly Tom Storey is no longer with us. He passed away quite unexpectedly on Friday 2nd May 2008. Not only was he a fabulous photographer but he was also a lovely man with a huge heart and a fantastic wit. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. These wonderful pictures are a reminder to us all of his huge talent to see something good wherever he looked. We are all richer for his being here and now poorer for his passing. Submitted on Tuesday 6th May 2008 by his nephew Eddie. I wish I could have known him better.
